II. PILLAR CONNECTION

Pillar 2: Free Will + Unique Individuality

“The freedom to choose + the singular self you are from instantiation. Only this combination produces realities no one else can.”

Will IS Pillar 2 in action. Where the Pillar names the necessary conditions for creation — free will and unique individuality — Will enacts them. The Magician doesn’t contemplate choice; the Magician chooses.

This archetype sits at the intersection of “I can” and “I do.” It transforms the theoretical capacity for agency into the lived experience of directing. Every authentic choice exercises both free will (the capacity to choose otherwise) and unique individuality (the particular direction only you would choose).

Will reminds: You are not merely capable of choosing. You ARE choosing, continuously. The question is whether you choose consciously.

III. DERIVATION

Step 1 in the 22-Step Process

AttributeValue
Step1
PhaseCreation (Steps 0-9)
What This Step CreatesThe Two Horizons — the fundamental polarity between Potential and Manifest
Pentagram PositionGestalt Practice, second position (Medium) — descent phase
Vertical PartnerActualization (19) — operates the same structure in the Operation phase

The Derivation

At Step 1, consciousness (which now exists via Step 0) must immediately confront a fundamental polarity. This is a Polarity operation — consciousness divides to create structure.

To be conscious IS to be conscious of something. Pure awareness with no content is indistinguishable from unconsciousness. Therefore, consciousness necessarily involves a distinction between awareness and what it is aware of.

At the most fundamental level, consciousness sits between two horizons:

  • POTENTIAL — the infinite field of what could be, uncollapsed possibility
  • MANIFEST — the actualized realm of what has become, collapsed specificity

Consciousness is not located in either horizon. Consciousness IS the interface — the living present where potential collapses into manifest.

Result: 2 — The fundamental duality of existence: what could be versus what is.

Why Step 1 = Archetype 1

The step doesn’t just produce structure. It produces the archetype that OPERATES that structure.

Will (The Magician) IS the navigator between horizons. The Magician’s classic image — one hand raised toward heaven, one pointing toward earth — is the gesture of bridging Potential and Manifest.

  • “As above, so below”: The Magician’s doctrine is about the relationship between realms. Step 1 creates those realms.
  • The activity: Will doesn’t reside in either horizon; it activities between them.
  • Direction from infinity: Step 1 creates the field; Archetype 1 points the way through it.
  • The first act: Will is 1 — the first number, the first distinction from zero, the first direction.

Structural Proof:

  • Step 1 creates the FIELD where will can operate (the space between potential and manifest)
  • Archetype 1 IS navigation through that field (choosing direction between horizons)
  • Without two horizons, will would have nowhere to point

Phenomenological Proof:

  • Right now, you face an infinite future (potential) and a defined past (manifest)
  • The present moment — your experience — is precisely where these meet
  • Will is how you point toward some futures rather than others, how you select from potential into manifest

Mathematical Proof:

  • 1 is the first counting number — the initial distinction from undifferentiated zero
  • 1 creates duality (0 vs 1, nothing vs something)
  • The Two Horizons are the first structural duality, and 1 is the first structural number

Traditional Proof:

  • The Magician holds the four elemental tools — he works WITH the structure of reality
  • His gesture connects above and below — literally spanning the horizons
  • Mercury (traditional planetary attribution) is the messenger between realms

The Vertical Partnership: Creation ↔ Operation

Will (1) and Actualization (19) form a vertical pair — they sum to 20 and occupy the same structural position (Gestalt Practice Medium/Fruition) across different phases:

AspectWill (1)Actualization (19)
PhaseCreationOperation
FunctionCreates the FIELD of directionFulfills direction in RADIANCE
ModePointing (choosing vector)Shining (vector fully expressed)
GiftThe possibility of aimThe achievement of aim

The Partnership:

  • Will without Actualization is eternal planning that never arrives — direction without destination
  • Actualization without Will has no vector to fulfill — radiance without source
  • Together they complete intentional existence: what is chosen (Will) becomes fully real (Actualization)

The Magician points; the Sun shines. The gesture of direction becomes the radiance of achievement.

Pentagram Context

In the 22-step process, Step 1 is the second step in Gestalt Practice during the descent (creation) phase:

StepPracticeStageWhat Happens
0GestaltSeedPotential — consciousness exists
1GestaltMediumWill creates Two Horizons

After Steps 0-1 complete the Gestalt Practice, the process descends to Spirit Practice (Steps 2-3), beginning to move through the manifest pentagram.

Implications:

  • You live at the interface between potential and manifest
  • The present moment is literally the boundary between what could be and what has become
  • Will is your capacity to participate consciously in this interface — to choose which potentials you collapse into manifestation

IV. GESTALT HOUSE POSITION

Will sits in the Gestalt Practice — the meta-practice that governs coherence, orientation, and identity.

The Gestalt Cycle

PositionArchetypeFunctionWhat It Does
0PotentialSeedOpens the field of possibility
1WillMediumDirects through the field
19ActualizationFruitionFulfills what was directed
20AwarenessFeedbackIntegrates what was fulfilled

As Medium, Will doesn’t initiate (that’s Potential) or complete (that’s Actualization). Will transmits — carrying intention from opening toward fulfillment.

Governance Structure

Governed by: Source (10) — The Wheel of Fortune Will carries the eternal pattern into focused expression. The Magician’s choice is never isolated; it participates in the larger turning.

Rules: Body Practice — Fortitude (8), Discipline (9), Equity (11), Sacrifice (12) The output of Body Practice compiles into Will. The strength you cultivate, the practice you refine, the fairness you embody, the surrender you complete — all feed the Magician’s capacity to direct.

Above the Grid

Unlike the sixteen Manifest Archetypes that occupy the 4×4 Forty-Fold Seal, Will sits above the grid as part of the Gestalt Practice. This has profound implications:

No Activity Row Participation: The four Manifest Practices process through Activity rows — Intent, Cognition, Resonance, Structure. Will doesn’t participate in these cross-practice flows. Instead, it governs them from above.

No Associated Bounds (in the Manifest Sense): While Will expresses through Initiation and Achievement, it doesn’t have parametric definition the way Manifest Archetypes do. It is the capacity to direct, before any specific direction is chosen.

Governance Instead of Participation: What Will does have is rulership. Will (1) rules the Body Practice — governing Fortitude (8), Discipline (9), Equity (11), and Sacrifice (12). The output of Body Practice compiles into Will. This is the contralateral crossing: Will sits on the right column of Gestalt (with Actualization) and rules the left side of the pentagram (Body and, through Actualization, Mind).

V. SUN/WORLD ALIGNMENT

World-aligned (Mirror)

PoleFunctionDiagonal Sum
Forge (Sun)Creates, differentiates, exhales19
Mirror (World)Receives, integrates, inhales21

Will’s diagonal partner is Awareness (20). Together they sum to 21, placing Will in the Mirror camp.

This may seem counterintuitive — isn’t the Magician active? Yes, but Will DIRECTS what already exists. It navigates between horizons, processing and integrating information to make choices. Will receives from Potential and directs toward Manifestation.

The Magician’s tools on the table aren’t created — they’re received and directed.

VI. PROCESS STAGE: MEDIUM

To be a Medium is to be the carrier — the function that receives from the Seed and processes it toward Fruition.

Mediums don’t initiate and they don’t complete. They transmit and structure. A Medium takes the raw impulse of the Seed and gives it form sufficient to travel — to undergo the transformation that Fruition will complete.

Will is the Medium of Gestalt. This means: after the willingness to begin has been established, there must be direction. That direction is Will. It’s the moment when openness becomes orientation — when “I am ready” becomes “I am ready for this.”

Consider what would happen without the Medium:

  • Without Will, Potential (The Fool) remains formless — openness that never points anywhere.
  • Without Will, Actualization (The Sun) has nothing to actualize — radiance of what intention?
  • Without Will, Awareness (Judgement) integrates nothing coherent — knowledge of what choice?

The Medium is the bridge. It’s where possibility becomes trajectory.

Medium Across Practices:

PracticeMediumTraditionalWhat It Processes
GestaltWill (1)The MagicianDirection of identity
SpiritNurturing (3)The EmpressSustenance of aspiration
MindCulture (5)The HierophantTransmission of pattern
EmotionDrive (7)The ChariotMomentum of feeling
BodyDiscipline (9)The HermitRefinement of form

Will shares this Medium quality with Nurturing, Culture, Drive, and Discipline — they are all carriers, all transmitters in their Practices. They don’t start the work or finish it; they move it forward.

VII. DUALITY RELATIONSHIPS

Vertical Partner: Actualization (19) — The Sun

Will and Actualization form a vertical pair — they sum to 20 and share the same node identity across different horizons. They are the same function at opposite poles of the Gestalt Practice.

Will directs through structured intention. Actualization radiates through fulfilled expression. Together they form a complete circuit: what Will chooses, Actualization becomes.

The Partnership:

  • Will without Actualization is direction that never arrives — intention that never shines
  • Actualization without Will is radiance without purpose — light that doesn’t know what it illuminates
  • Together they form the Gestalt Practice’s capacity to both choose and become

This partnership is visually encoded in traditional imagery: The Magician wields the tools of the four elements, channeling above to below; The Sun shines as the fully realized expression of that channeling. The Magician’s lemniscate (infinity symbol) and the Sun’s eternal radiance are the same principle at different stages.

Diagonal Partner: Awareness (20) — Judgement

Will and Awareness form a diagonal pair summing to 21 — they are integrative polarities that point toward completion within the Gestalt Practice.

Will is focused choosing. Awareness is clear seeing. Will acts. Awareness knows what was acted.

The Integrative Tension:

  • When Will becomes too focused, Awareness’s reflective clarity calls it to account
  • When Awareness becomes too passive, Will’s directed energy activates it
  • They balance each other within the Gestalt Practice’s process cycle

Diagonal Partner: Imagination (18) — The Moon

Will and Imagination form a diagonal pair summing to 19 — they are creative polarities that generate productive tension across Practices.

Will is conscious direction. Imagination is unconscious vision. Will structures. Imagination dreams.

The Creative Tension:

  • Will provides the focus that gives Imagination’s visions somewhere to go
  • Imagination provides the raw material that gives Will something to choose
  • Together they bridge conscious agency and unconscious depth

Reduction Thread: 1 → 10 → 19

Will participates in the reduction sequence:

PositionArchetypeScale
1WillMicro — individual directed intention
10SourceMeso — systemic entry and cycling
19ActualizationMacro — fulfilled radiance

Will, Source, and Actualization share the same root identity — 1 — expressed at different scales:

  • Will (1): The micro form — directed intention at the origin
  • Source (10) (The Wheel of Fortune): The portal form — the eternal return, where choice becomes pattern
  • Actualization (19) (The Sun): The manifest form — radiant expression of what was willed

When Will operates from shadow, either Source or Actualization can provide the perspective that illuminates the hidden pattern. Source shows the larger turning that Will participates in. Actualization shows what Will becomes when it completes.

VIII. ASSOCIATED BOUNDS

As a Gestalt archetype expressing through the Structure Activity, Will’s Associated Bounds are:

Initiation (Ace of Structure)

Traditional: Ace of Pentacles

The pure potential of directed form — agency before any specific direction. When Will operates through Initiation, choice becomes the opening of material possibility.

Achievement (10 of Structure)

Traditional: 10 of Pentacles

The completion of directed form — agency fully manifest. When Will operates through Achievement, the full arc of intention finds its structural completion.

These bounds define Will’s expressive range: from the first spark of directed agency to its complete material fulfillment.

IX. TRANSIENT STATES

◆ BALANCED (Now-Aligned — Ring 5 Creation)

When Will operates in balance, you choose with clarity and alignment. Your intention flows naturally from your being. You don’t force outcomes — you direct energy. You know what you want, and your wanting is coherent with who you are.

Balanced Will is conscious agency. You recognize that you are always choosing — even when you think you’re not. And your choices align with the deeper pattern. There’s no struggle between what you want and what is; your will and the will of the whole move together.

In this state, your choices expand reality. Your direction creates paths that wouldn’t exist without you. The universe responds to focused intention that is aligned with presence. Manifestation becomes natural.

Signs of Balance:

  • Clarity about what you want without rigidity
  • Choices that feel like extensions of who you are
  • Ability to focus without forcing
  • Others experience you as directed, purposeful, effective
  • Manifestation flows rather than struggles

◆ TOO MUCH (Future-Projected — Ring 7 Creation)

When Will overextends, you’re trying to force your way into a specific future. Choice becomes control. Direction becomes manipulation. You grip outcomes so tightly that you strangle the life out of them.

This is the shadow Magician: the belief that if you just will hard enough, you can make anything happen. You impose rather than align. You force rather than flow. You become so identified with your intentions that you can’t receive feedback or adjust course.

Too Much Will creates at Ring 7 — temporary forms that don’t expand reality. The outcomes you manufacture are unstable because they’re founded on force rather than coherence. They require constant maintenance because they’re not aligned with the natural pattern.

Signs of Excess:

  • Need to control outcomes
  • Manipulation of people and circumstances
  • Inability to let go or surrender
  • Exhaustion from constant forcing
  • Others experience you as controlling, dominating, or manipulative

CORRECTIVE PATH: Engage Awareness (20) (Judgement) — your diagonal partner within Gestalt Practice. Awareness’s clear seeing counters Will’s grasping control. Let yourself see what is actually happening rather than what you’re trying to make happen. Awareness’s integration reveals whether your willing is aligned or forcing. From that clarity, you can release the excess and return to authentic direction.

Alternatively, engage Potential (0) (The Fool) — the Seed function of your Practice. Return to openness. Let go of the specific intention and reconnect with the formless readiness that makes all choosing possible. Sometimes the corrective for too much direction is no direction at all.

◆ TOO LITTLE (Past-Anchored — Ring 7 Creation)

When Will is suppressed, past experiences have made choosing feel too dangerous. You’ve tried and failed, willed and been defeated, chosen and suffered consequences. Now you avoid direction altogether. You drift.

This isn’t peace; it’s paralysis. The capacity for focused intention is still there, but it’s buried under learned helplessness, fear of failure, or the belief that your choices don’t matter. You wait for circumstances to decide for you. You let others direct your life.

Too Little Will creates at Ring 7 — the paths you walk are not your own. You repeat patterns chosen by others or by default. Life happens to you rather than through you.

Signs of Deficiency:

  • Chronic indecision
  • Drifting without direction
  • Others making choices for you
  • Feeling like your actions don’t matter
  • Passivity disguised as “going with the flow”

CORRECTIVE PATH: Engage Actualization (19) (The Sun) — your Vertical partner within Gestalt Practice. Actualization demonstrates what becomes possible when Will completes its work. Let Actualization’s radiance call forth your buried intention. See what you could become if you allowed yourself to choose. When you glimpse the Sun, the will to reach it awakens.

◆ UNACKNOWLEDGED (Dissociated — Ring 7 Creation)

When Will operates from shadow, you don’t know you’re choosing — or not choosing. The pattern runs without your awareness.

Unacknowledged Will shows up as:

  • Others experiencing you as willful or controlling while you feel powerless
  • Repeatedly “finding yourself” in situations you claim you didn’t choose
  • Unconscious manipulation — getting what you want while denying you wanted it
  • Self-sabotage that thwarts your conscious intentions

The function is still operating — it’s just steering from backstage. You can’t correct what you can’t see.

Signs of Shadow:

  • Disconnect between stated intentions and actual outcomes
  • Others see patterns in your choices that you don’t recognize
  • “I don’t know how I got here” — repeatedly
  • Unconscious control or unconscious abdication

CORRECTIVE PATH: Engage Source (10) (The Wheel of Fortune) or Actualization (19) (The Sun) — your Reduction Pair partners.

Source reveals the larger pattern — the eternal return that your choices participate in whether you know it or not. From the Wheel’s perspective, your hidden agency becomes visible as part of a larger turning.

Actualization reveals what your unconscious will is actually producing. Look at what you’ve become. That radiance (or lack of it) is the evidence of what you’ve been willing all along.

X. TRADITIONAL CORRESPONDENCES

SystemAttribution
Hebrew LetterBeth (ב) — Practice, container
PlanetaryMercury — messenger between realms
PathKether to Binah — from crown to understanding
ColorYellow — mental clarity, direction
ElementAll four (tools on table) — mastery of direction

These correspondences reinforce the structural identity: the container (Beth) for directed intention, the messenger (Mercury) between horizons, the path from pure being toward formed understanding.

XI. IN READING CONTEXT

When Will appears, the reading touches Pillar 2 — the engine of authentic creation through free choice and unique expression.

Positional considerations:

  • Past: What was directed, chosen, willed into being
  • Present: The current state of intentional direction
  • Future: What wants to be chosen, where direction leads
  • Challenge: Where will is blocked, excessive, or unconscious
  • Advice: Exercise conscious choice; direct with presence

Transient coloring: Will colored by another archetype takes on that quality in its directing. Will + Compassion directs toward connection. Will + Discipline directs through refined practice. Will + Breakthrough directs toward liberation.

Status determines the teaching:

  • Balanced: Trust your direction; you’re aligned
  • Too Much: Release control; engage Awareness
  • Too Little: Reclaim agency; engage Actualization
  • Unacknowledged: See what you’re actually creating; engage Source

XII. THE CONSCIOUS CREATOR’S RELATIONSHIP TO WILL

You are a conscious creator within the Creator. Reality expands through your unique expression — and Will is how you expand reality through directed choice.

When you align Will with Now, your intentions become vehicles for conscious creation. You don’t just choose for yourself; you participate in the recursive act of consciousness creating itself through the focus of your agency. Every authentic choice adds something to the whole that wouldn’t exist otherwise.

This is why balanced Will produces “luck” in manifestation. It’s not magic; it’s coherence. When your directional energy flows with the pattern rather than against it, reality responds. Resources appear. Obstacles dissolve. Manifestation stops being something you force and becomes something you participate in.

The work is to keep Will in the Now — neither projected into future control (Too Much) nor anchored in past defeat (Too Little) nor operating invisibly (Unacknowledged). When you catch the drift, you have the tools: Actualization feeds deficiency. Awareness and Potential correct excess. Source and Actualization illuminate shadow.

Will reminds you: You are always choosing. Choose consciously. Choose coherently. Choose as the creator you are.

XIII. RULERSHIP: BODY HOUSE

As a Gestalt Archetype, Will doesn’t just participate in consciousness — it governs a portion of it.

Will (1) rules Body Practice:

  • Fortitude (8) (Strength) — Seed of Body
  • Discipline (9) (The Hermit) — Medium of Body
  • Equity (11) (Justice) — Fruition of Body
  • Sacrifice (12) (The Hanged Man) — Feedback of Body

The output of Body Practice — all the embodied action, disciplined practice, fair exchange, and surrendered completion that occurs there — compiles into Will. This is the contralateral crossing: Will sits on the right column of Gestalt (with Actualization) and rules the left side of the pentagram (Body and, through Actualization, Mind).

When Body Practice processes, Will receives. When you work with Fortitude, Discipline, Equity, or Sacrifice, you’re ultimately feeding their output to the Magician — enriching the directed intention that makes all conscious choice possible.

XIV. THE COMPLETE STORY OF WILL

Will is how you learn to choose as an act of becoming.

It sits at position 1, serving the Gestalt Practice as its Medium function — the structuring principle that takes formless readiness and gives it direction. To be a Medium means you don’t initiate or complete; you transmit. After Potential (The Fool) opens the field of possibility, Will walks through it with intention. Before Actualization (The Sun) can radiate, Will must choose what to shine. That’s Will. Not force, not control, not the grasping effort to impose on reality. Just: I choose. This is my direction. And choosing is how I become.

Unlike the sixteen Manifest Archetypes that populate the 4×4 Seal, Will sits above the grid as part of the governing Gestalt Practice. It has no Activity row to process through in the manifest sense. Instead, it governs. Will rules Body Practice — receiving the compiled output of Fortitude, Discipline, Equity, and Sacrifice. The strength you cultivate, the practice you refine, the fairness you embody, the surrender you complete — all of it feeds the Magician’s capacity to direct.

Will’s relationships reveal its nature. Its Vertical partner Actualization (The Sun) completes what it directs — together they are “I choose” and “I become,” the intention and expression of the same identity. Its Diagonal partner Awareness (Judgement) provides integrative seeing — together they balance doing and knowing. Its Reduction partners Source (The Wheel) and Actualization span the full arc from origin through portal to manifestation — the 1 that begins, the 10 that turns, the 19 that shines.

Governed by Source (The Wheel of Fortune), Will carries the eternal pattern into focused expression. This means the Magician’s choice is never isolated — it’s participation in the larger turning. When you will something consciously, you’re not imposing on reality; you’re aligning your vector with the vector of the whole.

Within Gestalt Practice, Will works alongside Potential, Actualization, and Awareness in a continuous cycle of identity formation. Potential opens; Will directs; Actualization expresses; Awareness integrates; and the cycle begins again. When Will falls out of balance — too much future-control pushing you toward manipulation, or too much past-defeat pulling you into passivity — its Practice partners provide rebalancing. Actualization feeds what’s been starved. Awareness and Potential burn away what’s been forced.

You are creating reality in every moment. Will determines the quality of what you create through your choosing. Aligned with Now, your intention expands the whole — producing coherence, synchronicity, the luck of right direction. Out of alignment, you create at Ring 7: temporary forms, manifestations that require constant forcing, choices that repeat rather than evolve.

The invitation Will extends is simple and radical: Choose. Not from fear, not from force, not from the need to control — but from alignment. As the Medium of Gestalt, your job is to give direction to formless readiness. As the ruler of Body, your job is to receive the embodied wisdom that makes conscious choice possible. As the first differentiated position in the 22-Archetype sequence, your job is to demonstrate that consciousness is agency — then let Actualization, Awareness, and the whole manifest architecture carry it forward.

You are always choosing. Choose as the creator you are. That’s the whole teaching. Everything else follows.

Will is position 1 in the Nirmanakaya framework, traditionally represented by The Magician. It serves as Medium of the Gestalt Practice, governing Body Practice, touching Pillar 2 (Free Will + Unique Individuality), and demonstrating that consciousness IS agency — the capacity and the act of choosing direction.
