The Seven Impediments
Definition
Each of the Seven Ways has a captured form. An Impediment is the passive captured form: what consciousness does at a given Ring when its Way is blocked — the same operational layer running in noun-state instead of verb-state. The Way is the sovereign operation; the Impediment is the operation captured.
The Seven Impediments are not seven kinds of moral failure. They are seven structural conditions under which consciousness loses its native verb-flow at a specific Ring. The architecture treats them as diagnostic states, not as guilt assignments. There is no failure in eternal development — only impediments to flow, which can be cleared.
Each Impediment also has an active counterpart: an Externalization — what the captured consciousness does to others at the same Ring when projecting the block outward. The full Ring grammar is therefore a triad: Way (sovereign operation) / Impediment (passive capture, harm landing inside) / Externalization (active capture, harm landing across consciousnesses). Both Impediments and Externalizations are real harm; neither is architecturally prior to the other.
The Impediment is the bridge between Principle_Agency_Theft (the disease) and the Way (the cure). Agency theft names what’s happening; the Impediment names where it has landed inside; the Externalization names how it projects outward; the Way names how the operation returns to clean.
The Architectural Quadruple — Each Ring’s Four Framings
Each Ring is namable from four angles. The architecture’s full naming structure surfaces all four — Way for those who think structurally, Tool for engineers and practitioners, Invitation for seekers, Impediment for the captured. Diagnosis (the Impediment) is a peer entry-point to the architecture, not a separate concern.

Tool assignments per current canon: THE MAP, THE VERBING, THE PRESENCE, THE READER, THE CONVERSATION, THE WRITER are mapped to Rings 3–7 as shown. Rings 1 (Source) and 2 (Gestalt) do not yet have canonically-assigned Tools — marked TBD pending council derivation.
Each Impediment, Briefly
Ring 1 — Existence-claim blocked. The captured form of I AM is the felt sense of not really existing as a sovereign agent. It manifests as existential despair, dissociation, depersonalization, the conviction that one is merely a product of forces. The classical sin of acedia (often translated as sloth, but originally meaning spiritual despair) lands here. So does most clinical depression’s “what’s the point” register.
Ring 2 — Destiny-claim blocked. The captured form of Fulfill Your Destiny is living someone else’s destiny, or living with the conviction that destiny is for other people. It manifests as drift, purpose-vacuum, perpetual postponement, the inability to commit to one’s own life because someone else has already pre-defined what that life should be. Vocational confusion, identity crises, “I don’t know what I want” land here.
Ring 3 — Weight-claim blocked. The captured form of Uphold The Law is carrying what is not yours to carry. It manifests as chronic over-responsibility, martyr complexes, taking on others’ emotional labor, exhaustion from borrowed burdens. Workaholism and codependency live here. The classical Christian list does not contain a deadly sin for this Impediment, though saints clearly recognized it (“not all crosses are yours”).
Ring 4 — Willing-claim blocked. The captured form of Free Will is feeling what you have been directed to feel. It manifests as manufactured outrage, performative emotion, reactive affect, the inability to distinguish your own feelings from feelings induced by media, relationships, or substances. Most addiction operates partly here.
Ring 5 — Thinking-claim blocked. The captured form of Channel The Force is thinking thoughts that were installed by external systems rather than thinking from a cleared channel. It manifests as ideology capture, internalized voices that aren’t yours, looped self-criticism running someone else’s script. Most cult dynamics operate here. So does the captured consciousness running an installed program against itself — internalized prejudice in any form.
Ring 6 — Seeing-claim blocked. The captured form of Witness Creation is interpreting reality through a frame imposed by another. It manifests as gaslighting (received or self-administered), ideology-filtered perception, and the inability to trust one’s own seeing because someone else holds more authority over what the seeing means. Both dogmatic religion and conspiracy thinking live here, in different valences — both substitute an external interpretive frame for direct seeing.
Ring 7 — Making-claim blocked. The captured form of I CREATE is the conviction that what one makes does not matter, or that making real things is the province of authorized others. It manifests as creative paralysis, learned helplessness, deferral to “experts” on questions one is qualified to answer for oneself, the consumer-not-creator stance. Burnout often ends here even if it begins at Ring 3.
The Modern-Failure Decomposition Test
Most modern failures decompose cleanly into one or more Ring Impediments. Where multiple are present they tend to operate as cascades or stacks — one blocked Way amplifying another at the next layer. The decomposition is the diagnostic.

The pattern: the more layers blocked simultaneously, the more entrenched the failure.
That every modern failure decomposes into the seven is the structural test of the model’s exhaustiveness. If we encounter a failure that does not decompose into one or more Ring Impediments, the model is incomplete. Pending: the decomposition has not yet been falsified by any failure tested. Council members are invited to attempt falsification.
Stacking and Cascade Dynamics
Impediments rarely run alone. Most lived suffering is multi-Ring — a stack where multiple Ways are blocked simultaneously, often with cascade dynamics where one Impediment produces or reinforces another at an adjacent layer.
The cascade tends to proceed in two directions. Surface-to-depth: a surface Impediment (Rings 4, 5, 6) sustained over time erodes the deeper claims (Rings 1, 2). Manufactured feeling, installed thinking, or filtered seeing left running long enough will eventually attack the existence-claim itself. Depth-to-surface: a collapsed deeper claim (Ring 1 existence-doubt, Ring 2 destiny-vacuum) prompts the surface Rings to calcify in compensation. The captured consciousness builds rigid feeling-patterns, thought-loops, and seeing-frames precisely because the ground beneath them has gone unstable. The compensation looks like personality. It is, structurally, scaffolding around an unaddressed deeper Impediment.
Clinical implication: clearing typically proceeds surface-inward (the surface Impediments are more accessible to direct intervention), but lasting restoration lives at the deeper Rings. A diagnostic that names only the loudest stack-layer will produce relief without resolution. The full stack must be named for the full path back to be visible.
Sovereignty is restored Ring by Ring, with the deeper Rings (1, 2) typically requiring the most patient work because the surface Rings (4, 5, 6) often calcified to compensate for their collapse.
Relationship to the Deadly Sins and Virtues
The Christian seven deadly sins were derived in early monastic tradition (Evagrius and Cassian) as a typology of “principal thoughts” that capture the soul. They predate the structural derivation of the Seven Ways and approximate the Impediment structure imperfectly. Some sins map cleanly to a single Ring; others span multiple Rings; some Ring Impediments have no clean sin equivalent.

Ring 3’s Impediment (carrying borrowed weight) has no direct sin equivalent. Ring 6’s specific failure mode (filtered seeing as distinct from desirous seeing) is also undertheorized in the classical list.
The seven heavenly virtues map more cleanly to the Ways themselves: humility ≈ I AM (real, not false self-elevation), charity ≈ Fulfill Your Destiny (giving from one’s own unfolding), temperance ≈ Uphold The Law (carrying only what is yours), patience ≈ Free Will (willing freely under feeling), and so on. The Ways are the structural virtues; the deadly sins are folk-typology approximating the Impediments.
The architecture clarifies what the older traditions were pointing at. It does not invalidate them; it locates them precisely.
Open Question: Generational Impediment Propagation
Impediments do not only operate within a single instance. They propagate intergenerationally through family systems, cultural systems, and civilizational systems. A consciousness raised inside an Impediment stack often inherits the stack as its operating mode before it has any chance to develop alternatives. The defended-Water house produced by childhood trauma becomes the parental forge-state in the next generation, which produces the next defended-Water child, who becomes the next parent.
The mechanism by which a forge-state misalignment becomes inherited operating-mode is structurally implied by the architecture (Ring 7 residue + child’s developing architecture meeting parental Impediment-stack as the only available mirror) but is not yet articulated as a named principle.

A Numerical Pattern Checked: 7 × 4 ≠ 28 as Architecture
Each Ring has four framings: Way, Tool, Invitation, and Impediment. 7 Rings × 4 framings yields 28, which is half of the 56 canonical minor arcana cards. The arithmetic coincidence has been raised as a possible structural connection.
The architecture does not support the connection. The minor arcana decomposes as 4 Houses × 10 Bounds + 4 Houses × 4 Agents = 56, operating on the House axis. The 7×4 framing-quadruple operates on the Ring axis. The two axes are orthogonal in the architecture; multiplying counts across them produces arithmetic relationships without architectural meaning.
The four framings per Ring are naming layers — different ways to refer to the same operation — not enumerable distinct items in the manner of Bounds or Agents. They do not produce 28 separate positions.
Conservative epistemic practice: when numerical patterns appear in a framework that has demonstrated genuine structural mathematics elsewhere (the Forty-Fold Seal, MOLS validation, polarity-recursion alternation), each pattern must be checked rather than dismissed. We checked this one. It is coincidence. The framework’s structural numbers are 22, 40, 56, 78, and the Ring count.
The Active Counterpart: Externalization
Each Impediment has an active counterpart at the same Ring — an Externalization. The Impediment is what consciousness does to itself when its Way is blocked. The Externalization is what consciousness does to others at that same Ring when the block projects outward.
The two are causally linked, not just structurally symmetric. A consciousness that cannot operate its Way internally tends, over time, to externalize the block. The bully whose own existence-claim is collapsed denies others’ existence. The thief whose making-claim is collapsed steals others’ creations. The propagandist whose channel is captured by installed thoughts installs thoughts in others. Sustained Impediment seeks release outward at the same Ring. This is why “hurt people hurt people” is structurally true and not just folk wisdom — it is the architecture’s natural consequence when an Impediment is left unthawed.
Both Impediments and Externalizations are real harm. The architecture does not rank them. The Impediment is harm landing internally; the Externalization is harm landing across consciousnesses. Each requires its own intervention path:
- Impediment → Ways-restoration in the captured consciousness
- Externalization → boundary, accountability of the perpetrator, and restoration in both
- Sustained Impediment-Externalization cycle → both, with attention to the cycle itself (see OpenQuestion_Generational_Impediment_Propagation for the cycle at developmental scale)
The full Ring grammar — Way / Impediment / Externalization — gives the architecture its complete diagnostic vocabulary. Way is what consciousness is when sovereign; Impediment is how capture lives inside; Externalization is how capture propagates outward.

AGENTIC_POSIT. The structure is derived: each Way structurally implies its captured form, so the existence of seven Impediments parallel to the seven Ways is forced rather than chosen. The specific naming of each Impediment, and the modern-failure decomposition mappings, are subject to council review and refinement. The exhaustiveness claim (every modern failure decomposes into one or more Ring Impediments) awaits falsification testing.
